Deceptions About the NEA: Discrimination and Diversity
Nurse's Notes

Many of our classrooms are forums for discreet bullying that we, oftentimes, don’t hear or see. It is a challenge to be an advocate for students when they find it hard to have the confidence to stand up for themselves. I often hear a student use the phrase, “You’re so gay”. Many times, the offending student is unaware that it is derogatory and contributes to a form of harassment.
One deception about the NEA is “curriculum that promotes homosexuality and supports hiring preferences for homosexual teachers” is one of its beliefs. NEA has worked hard to ensure schools raise awareness of homophobia and that as teachers and educators intervene when gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students are harassed. With the inception of clubs where students of these preferences come together to promote awareness or support each other, the issue is coming to the forefront allowing these students to be viewed in a positive light. As teachers and educators, we value students regardless of their sexuality, and like any group should work hard to promote their safety on our campuses.
Contrary to our opponents’ views, “no school attempts to teach students to become gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered”, this deception is often a accusation among those who speak against NEA’s beliefs without consideration that schools should be a safe place physically, mentally and emotionally for all students. These students experience a higher rate of verbal and physical harassment. It is the school’s responsibility to raise consciousness and intervene when students are being harassed.
“NEA supports policies that protect employees from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.” This is a different issue, “protecting employees from discrimination and favoring employees in hiring…” Despite the clarity of the NEA’s position, critics often blend the two things together. NEA believes “schools should create work environments that are free of anti-GLBT harassment and abuse.”
Teaching students to respect differences is something we hope would happen at home. We often find ourselves in the middle of these situations when we hear or see harassment directed at GLBT students. Continued awareness and not allowing harassment to happen is our responsibility.
At the same time, employees should feel their work environment is safe and welcoming and doesn’t promote discrimination of any kind. It’s important to understand the difference between hiring practices and employee protection.
